Nigeria Immigration Orders Inquiry Into Death Of Officers In Road Accident

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of a traffic accident on Sunday that killed “four personnel” of the Service.

Four members of the NIS band were reportedly killed while returning from Kano, where they had gone to play at an official ceremony, on the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano motorway.

In a news conference in Abuja on Monday, the Service Public Relations Officer, Dr Dotun Aridegbe, acknowledged the death of four Service personnel in the accident, which he said involved 11 individuals.

“The Acting CGI has ordered an immediate investigation to determine the remote cause of the accident,” he stated.

“We are committed to understanding the circumstances that led to this tragic event and will take appropriate preventative measures in the future.”

He stated that the 11 people were on their way back to Abuja from an official assignment in Kano in an eighteen-seater official transport when they were engaged in the heinous accident a few kilometres outside Kano.

“As a result, four of our personnel were killed,” he grieved. Seven of our colleagues with varying degrees of injuries are currently being treated at Kano’s Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.”

Aridegbe said arrangements for the burials of the dead personnel were being organized with utmost care and respect.

He said the Acting Comptroller General of Immigration, Caroline Adepoju, has “directed all Commands and Formation Heads to fly our flag at half-mast for the next seven days.

“We will observe a three-day mourning period in honour and memory of our fallen colleagues.”
