Obi Set To Support Construction Of New Hostel At Dominican College, Abatete
The former Principal of Dominican College, Abatete, Sr. Mary Pia Adesanya, O.P., now Superior-General of the Holy Family Sisters of the Needy following a Vatican appointment, has expressed her deep gratitude to Mr. Peter Obi for his continued support of the college.
She shared this sentiment on Sunday during the foundation-laying ceremony for a new boys’ hostel at the school.
Speaking with emotion, Sr. Pia recounted how, in 2012, Spring Bank offered to build a house for Mr. Obi to commemorate his 50th birthday.
Instead of accepting the personal gift, Mr. Obi requested that the bank use the funds to build hostels for three schools in Anambra State, one of which was Dominican College, Abatete. This selfless act, she stated, exemplified Mr. Obi’s enduring commitment to education and the well-being of young people.
She further recalled numerous interventions Mr. Obi initiated in schools across the state during his tenure as Governor.
These included providing buses, internet connectivity, computers, power generators, and other essential educational infrastructure.
The current Principal of the College, Sr. Clementina Wusaru Oti, O.P., corroborated Sr. Mary Pia’s remarks, adding that Mr. Peter Obi’s earlier support—from infrastructure improvements to vital educational resources—established a positive trajectory that continues to benefit the school.
She emphasised that the new hostel project is more than just a building; it’s a tangible illustration of the powerful partnership between government, private benefactors, and the school community, all working collaboratively for the common good.
After laying the foundation stone for the new hostel, Mr. Obi explained that the project is a joint venture with a generous Nigerian whose mother is from Abatete.
“I met a good-spirited Nigerian whose mother is from Abatete,” he said. “I inquired about what he had contributed to the Abatete community and eventually invited him to support Dominican School.
When the school mentioned the need for a hostel, I approached him, and I am pleased that he agreed to partner with me on this project.”
Mr. Obi also attended Sunday Mass with the students. During the service, the parish priest of Most Holy Name of Mary Parish, Rev. Fr. Ernest Esikaikwu, urged other Nigerians to emulate Mr. Obi’s exemplary life, describing him as a public figure whose actions embody the spirit of genuine nation-building.
Following the Mass, Mr. Obi addressed the students, encouraging them to dedicate themselves to their studies and remain focused, reiterating that education is the most valuable asset they can acquire for their future.
A highlight of the visit was Mr. Obi’s formal presentation of an initial donation of ₦25 million towards the hostel project, ensuring that construction could commence without delay.
Mr. Obi was accompanied by Prof. Stella Chinwe Okunna and Prof. Patrick Obi.
