NDDC Launches Tree-Planting Campaign, Donates Waste Segregation Facilities In Niger Delta

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has launched a comprehensive tree-planting campaign to promote environmental sustainability and community development throughout the Niger Delta region.

The initiative began with a stakeholder meeting in Port Harcourt, which aimed to raise awareness and encourage behavioural changes in honour of World Environment Day 2025.

Engr. Onouha Obeka, NDDC Director of Environmental Protection and Control, addressed the audience, reiterating the Commission’s commitment to biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and improving the quality of life for Niger Delta residents.

He praised the stakeholders for their volunteer efforts, emphasising the importance of environmental stewardship and collective action in creating a sustainable future for the region.

Engr. Obeka emphasised the importance of tree planting in combating environmental degradation caused by deforestation, a lack of environmentally friendly practices, and unethical business operations.

The campaign aims to address these issues head on, creating a greener and healthier environment for the Niger Delta’s communities.

In honour of World Environment Day 2025, with the theme “End Plastic Pollution,” the NDDC also donated seven waste segregation disposal facilities to Rivers State University in Port Harcourt.

During the handover ceremony, Engr. Obeka praised the university’s current environmental commitment, citing its progressive “green campus policy.”

He stated that the NDDC was delighted to support and strengthen the already strong environmental culture on campus.

“With your existing waste management system, these segregated waste facilities will help improve waste collection and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable campus environment,” said Engr. Obeka.

Arc. Henry Onu, Director of Works at Rivers State University, represented the Vice-Chancellor at the event and thanked the NDDC for its ongoing support and numerous interventions that have benefited the university. He assured the NDDC that the donated waste facilities would be used efficiently.

These initiatives demonstrate the NDDC’s commitment to environmental responsibility and its willingness to collaborate with communities and institutions in the Niger Delta to create a more sustainable and prosperous future.
