NESREA Launches Digital Waste Marketplace, Ushers In New Era For Circular Economy
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) is preparing to revolutionise waste management in Nigeria with the launch of “Waste Marketplace Nigeria,” a digital platform designed to facilitate waste material trading and accelerate the implementation of the Circular Economy.
This initiative, a collaboration between NESREA and Recyclestack, aims to digitise the Circular Economy framework in the country by leveraging the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Programme.
The EPR Programme, which is already in place in key sectors such as food and beverages, batteries, used tyres, and electrical electronics, increases producers’ responsibility throughout the product’s life cycle.
This program relies on Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs), recyclers, and collectors to effectively manage waste streams.
Waste Marketplace Nigeria aims to improve this ecosystem by offering stakeholders a transparent and efficient platform for connecting and trading recyclable materials.
NESREA expects the platform to significantly improve digital inclusion and job creation in the informal sector, resulting in increased material recovery, less illegal dumping, and higher recycling rates.
The platform intends to onboard at least 10,000 verified users within the first four months of its launch. Furthermore, it will be a valuable source of waste management data, allowing NESREA to better ensure compliance and enforce environmental standards.
The project will first launch in Lagos and Abuja, with plans to expand to other major cities in Nigeria.
“Waste Marketplace Nigeria offers a transformative opportunity to digitise Nigeria’s waste economy while enabling regulation, accountability, and economic empowerment,” said Prof. Innocent Barikor, Director General of NESREA.
“It also aligns with our commitment to addressing environmental issues through innovative solutions and partnerships.”
Prof. Barikor emphasised the collaboration’s strategic importance, stating, “This joint initiative between NESREA and Recyclestack is well positioned to formalise the sector, create inclusive green jobs, drive investments, and ensure environmental compliance.”
“It is also consistent with the National Development Goals and will serve as a model for other African countries.”
The establishment of Waste Marketplace Nigeria marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and economically viable waste management system in Nigeria.
By leveraging technology, NESREA and Recyclestack are paving the way for a truly circular economy that benefits both the environment and the national economy.
