Air Algerie Launches Direct Flights To Abuja, Strengthens Nigeria-Algeria Ties
Air Algerie, Algeria’s national airline, is set to launch its first direct flight from Algiers to Abuja on Sunday, April 6th, 2025, marking a significant step towards strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Algeria.
The announcement was made in a statement released Wednesday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, the acting spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to announce the launch of Air Algerie’s inaugural direct flight service from Algiers to Abuja on April 6, 2025.
This historic development is a significant step forward in Nigeria and Algeria’s growing diplomatic and economic relations,” the statement read.
The new route was launched as a direct result of the two countries’ Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA), indicating the successful culmination of collaborative efforts.
The flight, operated by Air Algerie on a Boeing 737, is expected to boost connectivity, promote tourism, and facilitate trade and investment between Nigeria and Algeria.
The Ministry’s statement emphasised both countries’ commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in aviation, commerce, and people-to-people exchanges.
It also praised the Nigerian Embassy in Algiers for its pivotal role in achieving this goal.
The inaugural flight is expected to carry the Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Algiers, leaders of the Nigerian Community in Algeria, and Algerian government representatives.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria… guarantees all necessary assistance to ensure the success and sustainability of this new service,” the statement continued.
The government believes that the initiative will strengthen Nigeria’s long-standing friendship with Algeria, opening up new opportunities for mutual growth.
Beyond strengthening bilateral ties, the new route provides tangible benefits to Nigerians.
The Ministry emphasised the “affordable fare structure and the proximity of Algeria to Europe,” which will provide a convenient gateway to the continent and strengthen Nigeria’s position as a regional hub for business, tourism, and transit.
Air Algerie will fly the route twice per week. The Nigerian government encourages citizens and the business community to take advantage of improved air connectivity to explore trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
“We look forward to a successful inaugural flight and a prosperous partnership with Air Algeria,” the statement concluded, indicating a promising future for Nigeria-Algeria relations.
