Lawyer Condemns Senator Nwebonyi’s ‘Disgraceful Bullying’ Of Ezekwesili In Senate Hearing
Human rights lawyer Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor KSC has strongly condemned Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi’s behaviour towards former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili during a recent Senate Committee hearing, calling it “disgraceful bullying” and an example of unchecked impunity.
Speaking to newsmen in Onitsha, Ejiofor described Senator Nwebonyi’s conduct as a “deplorable” display that demeans the office of a Senator and demonstrates a blatant disregard for decorum and human dignity.
He questioned how the situation had deteriorated to the point where such verbal assaults were tolerated within the Senate.
“I watched with profound disappointment the now-viral footage of Senator Nwebonyi, engaging in an appalling display of verbal assault and unruly conduct towards the esteemed former Minister, Madam Ezekwesili during a Senate Committee hearing,” Ejiofor stated.
Ejiofor, who is also a leading counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), called for immediate disciplinary action against Senator Nwebonyi, including suspension, arguing that in a society with accountability, such consequences would be expected.
He further asserted that Senator Nwebonyi’s alleged prejudice towards a particular individual, “Natasha,” should disqualify him from participating in any findings, deliberations, or inquiries related to the subject matter.
“This is horrible indeed! The unwarranted outburst is not only condemnable but has also succeeded in bringing the institution of the Senate into disrepute,” Ejiofor emphasized.
“Failure to address this transgression would set a dangerous precedence – further emboldening the erosion of civility and respect within the hallowed chambers of the legislature.”
He commended Ezekwesili for maintaining her composure and demonstrating “strength of character, intelligence, and poise” during the alleged verbal attack.
Ejiofor concluded by urging the Senate leadership to “rise to the occasion” and confront the “culture of impunity” head-on, stating that the Nigerian people deserve a legislature that upholds the values of respect, integrity, and accountability.
