A major political showdown is brewing in Rivers State, with the state government and a faction of the state legislature trading accusations of sabotage and defying the rule of law.

Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, an APC chieftain and former National Publicity Secretary of the nPDP, has launched a scathing attack on the 26 lawmakers loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accusing them of deliberately destabilising and crippling the state’s economy.

Eze’s statement, released on Sunday, comes after lawmakers adjourned the Rivers State House of Assembly indefinitely, effectively blocking Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s presentation of the state budget.

He described this action as a “sinister mission” to prevent the state from accessing funds from the federation account, citing a recent Supreme Court decision.

This, he claims, will result in unpaid salaries and stalled development projects, eventually harming Rivers State’s 7.6 million residents.

Eze referred to the lawmakers as “legislative misfits” and “political skit makers,” accusing them of putting their blind loyalty to Wike ahead of the welfare of their constituents.

He emphasised the governor’s numerous attempts to present the budget to the assembly, all to no avail.

He also criticised the lawmakers’ passage of three contentious bills: one granting themselves immunity, another revising the State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) law, and a third overhauling the state’s Local Government laws.

.Eze claimed that these actions violated the Nigerian Constitution, which grants immunity to the President, Vice President, Governors, and their Deputies.

Eze directly implicated President Bola Tinubu, claiming that the ongoing crisis was fuelled by his tacit support for Wike.

He accused Wike of “playing God” and pursuing a “do or die” political strategy, urging Tinubu to step in and assert his authority as President, reminding him that he is the Commander-in-Chief, not Wike. Eze warned that Tinubu should be held accountable for any future unrest in the state.

The APC chieftain urged Governor Fubara to reject the recently passed bills, describing them as detrimental to the state’s progress.

He believes the lawmakers’ actions indicate a possible impeachment attempt against the governor.

Eze concluded his statement with a call for peace and a reminder of the importance of upholding the rule of law, implying that the current crisis is the direct result of political manoeuvring and a disregard for the well-being of Rivers State residents.
