Rivers State Assembly Crisis: Supreme Court Ruling Sparks Outrage, Allegations Of Judicial Capture
A scathing statement released today by All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze condemns Friday’s Supreme Court rulings in the ongoing Rivers State political crisis, calling the judgments a “Pyrrhic victory” for powerful forces and a devastating blow to Nigerian democracy.
The rulings, which reinstate Speaker Martins Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers who defected to the APC, have fueled a firestorm of controversy.
Eze alleges that the court ignored overwhelming evidence of the defections, characterising the decision as “morally reprehensible, totally unacceptable, shamefully undemocratic, and a dastardly act.”
The crisis centers on a power struggle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Eze claims the Supreme Court’s decision, along with an order halting Rivers State’s federal funds, is a deliberate attempt by Wike, backed by the Presidency, to destabilize the state and seize its resources.
Eze’s statement pulls no punches, accusing the Supreme Court of being “kidnapped, raped, and decimated,” referencing past alleged government interference in the judiciary.
He alleges that this latest ruling is part of a broader pattern of executive overreach, citing the past treatment of former Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Onnoghen as evidence of a compromised judiciary.
“Who can defeat Wike, his cronies, and political associates at the FCT and Federal High Courts, the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court?” Eze asked rhetorically.
“I make bold to say, nobody in this country for now. That’s how bad the system has become.”
While praising Governor Fubara for his resilience in the face of intense pressure, Eze urges him to remain steadfast.
He contends that Fubara’s strong stance has exposed Wike’s alleged attempt to stifle Rivers State’s development for personal gain.
The statement concludes with a call to action, urging Nigerians to defend their democracy and resist what Eze describes as a calculated attempt by Wike and President Tinubu to create a one-party state.
Eze dismisses Wike’s claim of divine intervention in the Supreme Court rulings as “blasphemy,” predicting divine vindication for Governor Fubara.
The Supreme Court’s decisions have sent shockwaves through the political landscape, raising serious questions about judicial independence and the future of democratic governance in Rivers State.
The coming days are expected to bring further developments in this rapidly unfolding crisis.
