Onitsha, Anambra State – Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for the immediate reopening of several Onitsha markets that were closed due to an illegal drug crackdown at the Head Bridge Market’s Ogbo Ogwu section.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Obi expressed concern about the collateral damage caused by the closure, which affected neighbouring markets such as Rod, Allied and Tools, Plumbing Materials, Timber, Surgical, and Provision Markets.

While acknowledging the importance of combating the illegal drug trade and the sale of counterfeit goods, Obi argued that closing all unaffected markets is excessive and unjustified.

He questioned the rationale for punishing businesses that were not involved in illegal activities, emphasising the severe economic hardship imposed on millions of traders and their families.

“Closing other neighbouring markets seems excessive and unjustified,” Obi said. “Their continued closure is severely affecting the livelihoods of millions of people, especially during this difficult time in our country.”

Obi, drawing on his experience as Anambra governor, proposed a more collaborative and transparent approach.

He recalled instances in which his administration addressed similar public health threats by working methodically with relevant agencies to ensure fairness and minimise business disruption.

He advocated for searches to be conducted in front of store owners, with items removed in accordance with the law and due process.

“If the goal is to conduct a legitimate search, why is the closure extended to other markets? “What are their offences?” Obi asked, emphasising the importance of balancing public health concerns with economic realities.

“A more balanced and transparent approach will improve both security and economic stability,” he stated.

“While pursuing the goal of improved public health, we should not overlook the economic consequences of adjacent market closures.”

The market closures have sparked significant controversy, with many traders expressing anger and frustration at the disruption to their businesses. The Anambra State government has yet to publicly respond to Obi’s statement.
