NESREA To Ensure Environmental Compliance In Nigeria’s Massive Fibre Optic Network Project, Says DG
Abuja, Nigeria – The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has promised stringent environmental oversight for Nigeria’s 90,000-kilometer fibre optic network.
This comes after a meeting between NESREA Director General Dr. Innocent Barikor and representatives from two European companies involved in the European Union-funded project: Consulting & Management and Europe Ltd.
The project, aimed at improving Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and literacy, necessitates extensive infrastructure deployment, raising concerns about potential environmental consequences.
Dr. Barikor stated that NESREA will ensure that all installations strictly adhere to current environmental regulations.
He emphasised the agency’s commitment to conducting extensive due diligence and environmental impact assessments before the project begins.
Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of public sensitisation to mitigate any negative environmental consequences.
“The environment must be given due consideration,” Dr. Barikor stated. “We will ensure that all aspects of this project comply with our regulations. This includes careful planning, assessment, and ongoing monitoring.”
Leading the delegation from the European companies, Prof. Muhammad Ladan, affirmed their commitment to environmental compliance.
He confirmed that the team is already undertaking the necessary steps to secure the required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The meeting with NESREA, he explained, formed part of a broader stakeholder engagement and consultation process for the project.
The 90,000km fibre optic network represents a significant undertaking for Nigeria’s digital transformation.
NESREA’s pledge of robust environmental oversight assures that this ambitious project proceeds sustainably, minimising its environmental footprint and ensuring a positive impact on the nation’s environment alongside its digital advancement.
