Awka, Anambra State – The Anambra State Government has issued a clarification regarding Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s position on the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The government stated that recent reports suggesting Soludo opposes Kanu’s release are inaccurate and stem from misinformation spread by the opposition.

In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, the government asserted that Soludo has actively worked towards Kanu’s release, viewing it as crucial for restoring peace and stability in the South East.

The statement highlighted Soludo’s visit to Kanu at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility, where he offered to take Kanu on administrative bail.

“This gesture underscores Governor Soludo’s willingness to facilitate Kanu’s release and his commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the issues surrounding Kanu’s detention,” the statement read.

However, the government clarified the source of the misunderstanding. While supporting Kanu’s release, Soludo is deeply concerned about the criminal hijacking of the Biafra agitation.

Mefor explained that criminal elements have exploited the movement for their gain, engaging in kidnapping, robbery, ritual killings, and other violent crimes.

This, he said, has severely undermined the legitimacy of the movement and destabilised the South East region.

The consequences of this criminal activity are dire, according to the statement.

Increased violence, widespread fear, and economic stagnation due to investor hesitancy are cited as significant impacts on the region.

To counter this, the Soludo administration is set to launch “Operation Udo Ga-Achi” (Operation Peace Shall Reign) this January.

This comprehensive security initiative will utilise advanced surveillance technology, deploy specialised vehicles for stop-and-search operations, and train forest guards to collaborate with vigilantes and local authorities.

The government is committed to the success of this operation in restoring peace and stability to the South East.

The clarification aims to dispel what the government terms “desperate attempts” by the opposition to discredit Governor Soludo’s substantial achievements in office, claiming he has surpassed his campaign promises in less than three years.
