Minister Vows To Spearhead Fight Against Sexual, Gender-Based Violence In Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, has pledged her unwavering commitment to combating sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the country.

Speaking at a music show organised by the French Embassy to mark the culmination of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the Minister assured Nigerians that she will champion policy reviews and strengthen efforts to tackle the pervasive issue.

The event, which included a performance by Nigerian artist Morell and a documentary screening by the Anti-Sexual Violence Lead Support Initiative (ASVIOL), provided a platform for the minister to address the urgent need for increased support for victims.

She stressed that SGBV affects all segments of society, emphasising that rape is not limited to the less privileged.

“Anybody can be raped,” the Minister stated. “Sexual and gender-based violence is everybody’s problem.”

Hajiya Ibrahim outlined several key initiatives she plans to undertake. These include a comprehensive review of existing legal instruments to ensure stronger prosecution of offenders, a stakeholders’ meeting next year to strategize with partners committed to women’s and children’s rights, and a focus on increased support for survivors.

She recounted recent meetings with survivors in Lagos, describing their experiences as heartbreaking and underscoring the need for immediate and amplified support.

“We need to triple up our efforts,” she declared. “We must not cultivate rapists. We must take decisive action now.”

The minister acknowledged the challenges, including a shortage of shelters and safe homes for victims. She emphasised the need for strategic resource allocation, calling for collaboration with development partners and the alignment of efforts with a national action plan.

Hajiya Ibrahim urged all stakeholders to contribute their ideas to create a unified front against SGBV.
