WOMAN Visits Bayelsa Special Needs School To Mark International Day Of Persons With Disabilities

Yenagoa, Bayelsa State – The Women Organised for Mentorship and Advocacy Network (WOMAN) has marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) with a visit to the Bayelsa State School for Children with Special Needs.

The December 3rd commemoration, which also falls within the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, focused on highlighting the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, particularly concerning gender-based violence.

Leading the delegation, WOMAN Executive Director Lady Eunice Nnachi emphasised the importance of viewing disability as a societal construct rather than a limitation.

“There is no disability, it only exists in the mind,” she declared, encouraging students to embrace their abilities and pursue their dreams.

She stressed the significance of self-belief and assured them of a bright future.

Lady Nnachi also used the opportunity to address the crucial issue of gender-based violence, urging the children to speak out against any form of abuse, whether at home or school.

“No one should abuse you, no one should touch your private parts,” she emphasised, instructing them to report any instances of defilement or inappropriate touching, regardless of the perpetrator’s age.

Echoing this message,the Woman Leader of ENWAF, Lady Oby Ezissi, reinforced the idea of inherent abilities and the potential for success among all children.

Administrative Secretary Ebizimo Agedah called upon parents, caregivers, and teachers to provide unwavering support and positive reinforcement to their students.

Vice Principal Mrs. Celestina Mbakwe expressed gratitude for WOMAN’s visit and the educational outreach.

Students Seminiziber Joseph and Sawari Paigha also voiced their appreciation for the organization’s efforts.

The event culminated in the distribution of books, writing materials, and sanitary products to the students.

The visit served as a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusivity and the need to combat gender-based violence against vulnerable populations.
