President Tinubu Confers GCON, Nation’s Second Highest Honour On House Speaker
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Nigeria’s second highest national honour, on Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, sparking both celebration and debate. This decision came after a heated debate in the House, during which supporters argued for a higher honour for the Speaker.
The initial awarding of the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) to the Speaker, announced during President Tinubu’s 64th Independence Day speech on October 1st, sparked debate in the House.
Members argued that the Speaker’s position and contributions warranted more prestigious recognition.
Responding to the House’s sentiments, President Tinubu has elevated the Speaker’s honour to GCON, bringing it in line with the National Order of Precedence.
This decision demonstrates a commitment to correcting what was perceived as an oversight.
The elevation of Speaker Abbas to GCON has generated mixed reactions. Some view it as a symbolic gesture of respect for the legislative arm of government, while others see it as a strategic political move aimed at maintaining harmony between the executive and legislative branches.
The debate surrounding the Speaker’s honour highlights the ongoing dynamics between different branches of government in Nigeria.
It also raises questions about the criteria used in awarding national honours and whether they are truly representative of individuals’ contributions to national development.
The formal decoration ceremony, scheduled for a later date, will see Speaker Abbas, Senate President, other principal officers of the National Assembly, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria receive their newly conferred honours.
This event will offer a platform for further discussion on the importance of national recognition and the role of different institutions in shaping Nigeria’s future.
