Emulating Ambode And Sanwo-Olu Is Necessary Because Their Camaraderie Portends Progress
BY ISAAC ASABOR*
Camaraderie is a rare gem in Nigerian politics, where disagreements are frequent. The political landscape is characterised by power struggles, betrayals, and a reluctance to form alliances for the greater good. In this context, the relationship between former Lagos State Governor Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and his successor, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stands out as a beacon of hope for a politics defined by respect, collaboration, and shared vision.
Ambode’s tenure as governor of Lagos State from 2015 to 2019 was marked by major infrastructure projects and a push to modernise Africa’s largest city. However, his bid for a second term was thwarted by the political machinery that propelled Sanwo-Olu to prominence. In many political environments, such a scenario would have resulted in bitterness and long-term rivalry. However, Ambode chose a different path, demonstrating maturity and grace that is uncommon in Nigerian politics.
Instead of becoming an adversary, Ambode accepted the results of the party’s primaries and, more importantly, backed Sanwo-Olu’s campaign. This decision laid the groundwork for the two parties’ current cordial relationship, which is based on mutual respect and a shared interest in the development of Lagos State. Sanwo-Olu, for his part, has expressed gratitude for Ambode’s efforts during his tenure in office, frequently recognising the groundwork laid by his predecessor. This mutual respect not only facilitated a peaceful transition but also ensured continuity in governance, which is critical for long-term development.
The friendship between Ambode and Sanwo-Olu is about more than just personalities; it is about setting a standard for how Nigerian politicians should conduct themselves. In a country where political rivalries frequently result in governance failures, the peaceful and cooperative relationship between these two leaders offers a model for others to
follow. Their collaboration exemplifies the idea that progress is best achieved when leaders set aside personal ambitions in favour of the collective ambition of the people.
In this context, it is expedient to specifically urge the governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and his former deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu, to wave the olive branch and take a cue from the camaraderie that now exists between Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who are undoubtedly models of political cooperation.
In a similar vein, former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who is now Minister of the FCT, and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, should follow in the footsteps of Ambode and Sanwo-Olu to promote peace and good governance in Rivers.
The reason for the foregoing plea is not farfetched: the people of Edo State and Rivers State elected these politicians to lead them, not to be embroiled in political conflicts. The politicians mentioned here have a responsibility to rise above their differences and collaborate for the benefit of both states. By emulating the Ambode-Sanwo-olu bond, they can show that leadership is more than just holding office; it is also about ensuring that governance is stable, effective, and focused on the needs of the people.
One of the most visible examples of this collaboration is the ongoing Lagos State Development Plan 2052, which Sanwo-Olu has continued to advance, building on Ambode’s efforts. The plan envisions Lagos becoming Africa’s model megacity, as well as a global economic and financial hub. Working together, even across administrations, Ambode and Sanwo-Olu have demonstrated that long-term visions can be realised when successive governments are willing to collaborate rather than undermine the efforts of their predecessors.
Furthermore, their relationship serves as a reminder that politics should be about serving the people rather than pursuing personal gain. The ability to collaborate, even after a contentious political battle, demonstrates maturity, which is critical for the advancement of any society. Nigerian politicians of all levels can benefit from this example. The current challenges confronting Nigeria, ranging from economic insecurity to insecurity, necessitate leaders who can rise above minor disagreements and focus on the greater good.
The bitter rivalries and acrimonious transitions that have plagued Nigerian politics for decades have done little to help the country’s development. On the contrary, they have frequently resulted in stagnation, with each new administration more focused on
Instead of building on its predecessor’s work, it undoes it. This cycle of destruction and reconstruction has put Nigeria behind many of its peers.
Without a doubt, the Ambode-Sanwolu relationship indicates a different path, one in which political differences do not preclude cooperation and the emphasis is on governance rather than grudges. It is a path that Nigerian politicians must take if the country is to progress.
The call for Nigerian politicians to follow in the footsteps of Ambode and Sanwo-Olu heralds a new era in Nigerian politics, one marked by respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to progress. The friendship between these two leaders is a powerful reminder that politics can be a force for good, a tool for achieving common goals rather than a battleground for personal vendettas.
As Nigeria navigates its complex political terrain, the Ambode-Sanwolu relationship serves as a model for what is possible when leaders prioritise unity over division and progress over pettiness. It is a lesson that, if followed, could pave the way for a better, more prosperous future for all Nigerians.
