The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) have described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s new measures to reduce food price inflation as radical and proactive, with the expectation that they will bear fruit soon.

In a statement signed by the chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and secretary, Sunday Shadrach Gyungoun, the group argued that the new measures will help to stem the tide of inflation and drive food prices down.

The group applauded the bold initiative to temporarily lift import duties on certain food items, describing it as a positive step forward.

The statement read in part: “We, the Tinubu Media Volunteers, have reviewed the administration’s proactive measures aimed at reducing food inflation in the country and concluded that they are in the best interests of the people.

“We believe that if these measures, which include the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes on the importation of food commodities such as wheat, maize, cowpeas, and husked-brown rice, are properly implemented, they will significantly reduce food prices in the country.

“We also note that President Tinubu considered and implemented these measures because he has genuine concerns and interests in both the welfare of the general public and farmers.

“The measures designed to close the country’s yawning food production gap will last 150 days, during which time local farmers are expected to increase production.

“It is expected that the Tinubu administration’s intervention to reduce the inflationary trend in the food sector will result in the importation of 250,000 metric tonnes of wheat and maize.

“For us, these proactive interventions demonstrate the government’s responsibility and responsiveness to the people’s needs.

“We are confident that, in the end, these measures will address food insecurity in a very short period of time.

“We also acknowledge that the position of the federal government to adopt recommended retail prices for imported food items will go a long way towards making the food items available and affordable to Nigerians.

“We are convinced that this control measure will check the excesses of shylock middlemen that may want to take advantage of the situation.”

The pro-Tinubu group urged Nigerians to see the move as necessary to address the country’s food crisis and to continue to support the federal government.
