Supreme Court Decision On LG Will Reinforce Grassroots Development, Operational Efficiency, Says Group

The TSF has stated that the Supreme Court ruling, which requires funds intended for local governments to be disbursed directly, bypassing previously existing joint accounts managed by state governments, is perfectly consistent with our long-standing advocacy for local government autonomy and emphasises the critical importance of financial independence for effective grassroots development.

The Tinubu Stakeholders Forum (TSF) therefore states that the Supreme Court decision affirming the autonomy of local governments is a monumental step towards reinforcing grassroots development.

In a statement signed by Chairman Ahmad Sajoh and Secretary Josiah Afolabi, the group praised the Supreme Court’s landmark decision ordering the Federal Government to immediately begin direct payment of funds to local governments.

The group claimed that it would improve operational efficiency and accountability in local governments.

“In our opinion, it is a watershed moment that represents a significant step towards strengthening grassroots democracy and promoting local government administration throughout Nigeria.

“We understand that the Supreme Court’s decision will significantly improve the operational efficiency and accountability of the third tier of government.

“By ensuring that funds are directly channelled to Local Governments, we can ensure that resources are used where they are most needed, accelerating development projects and improving community service delivery.

“This ruling effectively curtails the undue influence of state governments over local government finances, promoting a more transparent and equitable distribution of resources.

“For us, a particularly groundbreaking aspect of the ruling is the outlawing of caretaker committees, which have long been used to undermine democratic processes at the local level.”

TSF also provided insight into the judgment’s implications for the country’s local governments.

“So, the Court’s decision to withhold funds from councils operating under such caretaker arrangements is a decisive step in upholding constitutional governance.

“It is telling that, as pointed out by Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, the state has only held local government elections twice since 1999. “This ruling sends a clear message that the era of undemocratic practices at the local government level is over.

“This era is bound to bring about a new dispensation of regular and fair elections that thrust up local leaders who will be true representatives of their communities.

“This groundbreaking ruling will not only foster economic growth but also bolster public confidence in local governance. Now that they have been empowered with direct access to funds, local governments can now prioritise critical areas such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security.

“This newfound financial autonomy is essential for addressing the unique needs of each community, driving sustainable development, and enhancing the overall quality of life for all Nigerians.

“We therefore call on all relevant government agencies to iron out any grey areas in the judgement and swiftly implement the Supreme Court’s directive. The prompt and efficient execution of this ruling is crucial to realising its full benefits and ensuring that local governments are fully equipped to meet their constitutional responsibilities.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the Supreme Court for upholding these long-sought-after principles of justice and equity. This historic decision represents a transformative moment for local governance in Nigeria, “it added.
