Another Catholic Priest Kidnapped In Anambra Barely A Month Later
By Chuks Eke
Another Catholic Priest has been Kidnapped in Anambra barely a month later.
Rev. Fr. Gbuzuo was kidnapped on May 15, this year, in Onitsha, Anambra state’s commercial city, while Rev. Fr. Ike was kidnapped on Sunday, June 16 at Amagu Junction, Ndiokpalaeke near Ajalli in the state’s Orumba North Local Government Area.
While Fr. Gbuzuo was released several weeks later after an undisclosed sum of money was paid to the abductors as ransom, Fr. Ike’s abductors have yet to contact his relatives or parishioners.
Although the reason for his kidnapping has yet to be determined, eyewitnesses in the area say the priest was returning from St. Michael’s Catholic Church, where he and two others had attended an early morning Mass, when the kidnappers double-crossed the vehicle he was in.
According to the source, “When they arrived at Amagu Junction, their vehicle was double-crossed by armed men operating in three vehicles, but the two others who were inside the same vehicle with Fr. Ike barely escaped the scene, while the criminals took away the priest and some personal belongings of the escaped occupants in the vehicle.”
Confirming the incident, Anambra State police spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga told reporters on the phone that the command had heard about it and had deployed intelligence and operational assets to ensure his safe rescue.
