DSS Warns Nigerians To Resist Attempts To Foment Anarchy On Democracy Day
The Department of State Services (DSS) has urged Nigerians to resist any attempts by non-state actors to incite mass discontent through potentially violent demonstrations on the country’s 25th Democracy Day celebration.
This is because it informed citizens about plans by certain individuals and groups to hold physical protests in some parts of the country on June 12, 2024.
In a statement to journalists on Tuesday, Peter Afunanya, Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, DSS, National Headquarters, Abuja, stated that the protests were planned with sinister intentions to coincide with the Democracy Day celebration.
While citizens may have the right to assemble and express themselves, the DSS warned that these “freedoms should not be used to undermine public safety and national security.”
The statement reads, in part, “The determination of some non-state actors to incite mass disaffection through potentially violent demonstrations will not be tolerated.”
“However, it is instructive to note that violent demonstrations contradict the Federal Government’s peaceful disposition to resolve all disputes, including the minimum wage.
“Citizens are thus urged to resist any persuasions to break the law or cause disorder and anarchy in the country. People who are dissatisfied are encouraged to channel their complaints through the proper channels and procedures.
“As a result, the DSS reaffirms its unequivocal commitment to protecting the country from hostile acts orchestrated by disgruntled groups to disrupt law and order.
” It will also maintain collaboration with all relevant stakeholders, including sister security agencies, to keep the peace and protect lives and property across the country. Law-abiding citizens are advised to conduct their businesses without fear.”
The Service, while congratulating the government and citizens on this auspicious occasion of 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, urged continued patriotism, unity, and commitment to building the Nigeria of our collective dreams.
Meanwhile, the DSS website, dss.gov.ng, email address, dsspr@dss.gov.ng, and phone numbers +2349153391309;+2349088373514 are still available to the public if they need to contact it.
