Bassey Explains How GenZs Connect Spiritually Through Gospel Music
In Nigeria, the spiritual rhythms of Gen Z are finding their peak moments, as data reveals the preferred days, hours, and content for gospel listening in this demographic.
According to recent insights, Sundays emerge as the prime day for Gen Z listeners to stream gospel music and faith-based content on Spotify, with their primary streaming hours falling between 6:00 am and 10:00 am.
User-generated gospel playlists on platforms like Spotify are gaining traction, with Nigerian Gen Zs curating over 140,000 playlists dedicated to gospel tunes. This trend reflects the generation’s inclination towards music that resonates with their faith and values.
Among the most streamed gospel artistes in both global and local markets among Nigerian Gen Z listeners over the last 90 days, names like Nathaniel Bassey, Moses Bliss, Maverick City Music, Dunsin Oyekan, and Ebuka Songs dominate the scene.
These artists have captured the hearts of young listeners with their uplifting melodies and spiritually enriching lyrics. Furthermore, specific gospel tracks have garnered significant attention from Gen Z audiences.
Sunmisola Agbebi’s “B’Ola – Honour,” Ebuka Songs’ “Calling My Name (I’m A Soldier) – Live,” and “I Will Pray,” along with collaborations like Esther Oji’s “Fragrance (feat. GGTQ All Stars)” and Neeja’s “Darling Jesus,” have been among the most streamed tracks in recent months.
In terms of albums, offerings from artists like Judikay (“Man Of Galilee”), Moses Bliss (“Too Faithful”), and Nathaniel Bassey (“HALLELUJAH LIVE” and “Names of God”) have consistently topped the charts, reflecting the popularity of full-length projects that provide a holistic spiritual experience.
Aside from that, faith-based podcasts or gospel podcasts have emerged as another avenue for spiritual nourishment among Gen Z listeners.
Programs such as “The Power of Your Mind” by Pastor Chris, “MORNING DEW” by Apostle Femi Lazarus, and “The Daily Bible” offer insightful discussions and reflections on faith, attracting a dedicated following.
As Gen Z continues to engage with gospel music and faith-based content, these trends underscore the significance of spirituality and religious expression among Nigerian youth.
