The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, welcomed Mr Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, to the northern Nigerian commercial city on Monday.

On Monday afternoon, Daily Trust posted pictures of Obi’s visit to the traditional ruler on social media with the caption ‘Kano Emir Welcomes Peter Obi to his Palace’.

Obi was in Kebbi State last week, where he urged the state government and other agricultural stakeholders to invest heavily in the sector, citing God’s blessings on the state’s agricultural land.

Obi pointed out that Ukraine, which recently donated grains to Nigeria, does not have half the cultivated land that Kebbi State and the entire North West geopolitical zone of Nigeria do, and that investing in agriculture is a higher priority and a legacy worth passing down to future generations.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate also stated that increasing agricultural production in the country will eliminate problems such as insecurity, poverty, inflation, and food scarcity.

He stated that the Federal Government must invest heavily in agriculture as the backbone of the economy rather than oil, pointing out that Nigeria has the world’s largest uncultivated land, the majority of which is located in the country’s north.

“Effective agricultural production has the potential to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty and address the country’s insecurity issues.

Furthermore, agriculture serves as the foundation for achieving food security, eliminating hunger, and stabilising any economy through foreign exchange earnings.”

Obi recognised Kebbi State as an agricultural hub, claiming that it has the potential to feed the nation through increased production.

“I am on a private visit to Kebbi State, having previously visited Nasarawa, Niger, and Sokoto States to participate in the Ramadan breakfast with our fellow Muslims and identify areas of need where I can assist.” He elaborated.

During his visit, the former governor of Anambra State served Ramadan breakfast to 100 Muslim faithful and commissioned a solar-powered borehole at the Hutawa Fulani settlement.

He was also at the Emir of Gwandu’s Palace, where he paid a courtesy visit to Alhaji Muhammad Illiyasu Bashar.

Earlier, the former Governor of Anambra State paid a courtesy visit to Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris, who assured him that his administration would continue to invest in human capacity development and agriculture as the foundation of economic development.

He stated that, given the importance of agriculture as a pillar of economic growth and wealth creation, the state government has made significant investments in the sector, adding that the state government recently purchased fertiliser worth N2.9 billion and distributed it free to farmers regardless of political affiliation.

The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Bala Tafida, informed the visitor that the government had also distributed solar-powered water pumps and other agricultural inputs to farmers in order to reduce production costs, increase yields, and stabilise farm produce prices.
