Dr. Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, has signed a bill repealing the payment of pensions to former governors and their deputies, which was enacted by the previous administration.

The Executive Bill, passed by the State House of Assembly on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, is now referred to as the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions (Repeal) Law, 2024”.

In a press statement Thursday night, Kazie Uko, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Otti signed the new law on Thursday, saying government is not about self-interest, and that self-interest destroys government.

“Even before this new law went into effect, many people who have followed our views in the national debate understood that we would not continue to pay pensions and allowances to this group of former government officials,” Governor Otti said.
