Peter Obi Describes Killing Of Soldiers In Delta State As ‘Barbaric, Unacceptable’
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate for 2023, has condemned the killings of army officers and soldiers in Delta State. He referred to the act as “barbaric and unacceptable.”
Last Thursday, youths killed some Nigerian army personnel, including a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, and 12 soldiers, while on a peace mission in Okuoma, Bomadi LGA, Delta state.
Obi responded in a post on his X handle, calling for an immediate investigation into the incident.
Obi wrote, “This killing is barbaric and unacceptable, and it should not be tolerated by Nigerians or any sane society.”
“For a country already dealing with a high level of insecurity, killing our security personnel who risk their lives for the country’s security will be too much to bear.
“These tragic events, as well as numerous cases of murder, kidnapping, and violent crime across the country, have fueled deep concerns about the nation’s security.
“These security personnel make significant sacrifices in the line of duty and, in some cases, pay the ultimate price. We must therefore appreciate and value them by demonstrating empathy for them and providing healthcare for those who have been wounded.
“There should be adequate compensation and welfare packages for the families of those killed in active service. We should all show our love by commiserating with their families and even visiting them during these difficult times.”
The former Anambra governor urged security agencies not to be discouraged by the incident.
“I sincerely condole with the families of the deceased security personnel as well as their respective security formations (Nigerian Army and Nigeria Police Force) on the tragic loss of their personnel,” Obi added.
“I encourage them not to be discouraged by these unfortunate developments, but to view them as a challenge to improve their performance in their duties.
“I urge the government and security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, arrest, and prosecution of those responsible for these heinous crimes.
“May God grant eternal rest to all security officers who died fighting for our country’s peace and security. May God grant us all the fortitude to bear this tragic, irreplaceable loss.”
