Workshop In London: Obi Blasts AG’s Office For Being Insensitive To Plight Of Nigerians
Peter Obi, the main opposition voice and Labour Party standard bearer, has chastised the Accountant General of the Federation’s office for hosting the Workshop in London, claiming that it demonstrates the office’s insensitivity to the country’s dire situation.
According to Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Chief Spokesman, in a press release, Obi stated that Nigerians must resist and condemn such recklessness, which is a clear display of emotionlessness.
Obi wrote on his X account on Saturday that “Nigerians must vehemently denounce and condemn the decision of Nigeria’s Accountant-General’s Office to hold a workshop in London.”
This decision is not only unacceptable, but it also raises serious concerns on multiple levels.
“Given the country’s current difficulties and the plight of our national currency, any public function abroad is insensitive on the part of the government, any agency, or individual involved.
“First and foremost, it demonstrates a flagrant disregard for fiscal responsibility and prudent public expenditure. At a time when Nigeria is dealing with economic challenges such as inflation, currency depreciation, and a growing budget deficit, wasting taxpayer funds on extravagant overseas workshops is completely irresponsible.
“The funds set aside for such purposes should be used to address urgent domestic needs like healthcare, education, infrastructure, and poverty alleviation.”
“Also, holding the workshop in London sends the wrong message to Nigerians and the international community.” It reinforces the perception that government officials enjoy luxury and extravagance at the expense of ordinary citizens.
“It promotes an elitist culture and a disconnect from the realities of ordinary Nigerians, who struggle every day to make ends meet despite rising living costs and limited access to basic services.
“There are serious questions about the necessity and effectiveness of holding a workshop abroad, particularly in an expensive city like London.
“Nigeria has a large number of highly qualified professionals and experts who can provide the necessary training and expertise.
“By outsourcing such activities to foreign countries, the government not only undermines local expertise but also fails to capitalise on the wealth of knowledge and experience available within its borders.
Furthermore, holding a workshop in London raises concerns about transparency and accountability in government procurement procedures. There must be complete transparency and justification for why London was chosen as the location, as well as how vendors and contractors were selected.
“Any suspicion of impropriety or favouritism in awarding contracts for such events must be thoroughly investigated and resolved.”
