Anambra: ACTDA Won’t Renege In Giving Awka Befitting Status, Says Onuko
Contrary to negative publications in some sections of the online media that traders in Awka counted their losses when operatives of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) embarked on enforcements recently to clean up the state capital of the mess generated by petty traders trading on the streets of Awka, ACTDA has said it would not renege in giving Awka a befitting status.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ACTDA, Hon. David Osita Onuko, who stated this while speaking exclusively with this journalist, said ACTDA has issued several warning notices to people trading especially on the new dual carriage roads built by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo as such unpatriotic acts deface the state capital.
Onuko said ACTDA also carry out routine sensitisations and public enlightenment to educate citizens on the need to restrict their trading activities in a manner that it would not constitute an eyesore in the public glare.
He said ACTDA recently issued a warning notice which elapsed on 15th December, where it announced its enforcement telling people trading on the streets of the state capital to evacuate their wares or face severe consequences.
He said, ” Recall that for the past two weeks and most recently, we have given notices to petty traders that have lilitteredome streets of Awka with their trading activities and causing human and vehicular discomforts to residents and visitors of the capital city.
So we have moved into the streets to clear the streets off these people that are defacing the capital city.
We are not witch-hunting them but we are just trying to say that certain activities are not allowed in certain places and most definitely not in the capital city.
We wouldn’t want the roads that Mr. Governor has spent taxpayers’ money to build to be endangered by the activities of a few seeking to earn a living.
We are also advising them to go into various designated places where the market is allowed and desist from further defacing the capital city.
