Following the judgement of the Supreme Court which confirmed Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, as the duly elected, substantive, and authentic Governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 general elections, the party has called on Olorogun David Edevbie and all persons concerned in the litigation to sheathe swords for the success of the party.

The leadership of the party described the judgement given on October 21, 2022, as a victory for the Delta PDP family and further appealed to all party faithful, especially Olorogun Edevbie, to close ranks and march with full confidence and authority, into the party’s campaigns.

He mentioned that the litigation which had spanned for months after the party’s primary in March over its authentic gubernatorial candidate had initially given the opposition false hope but with the judgement now delivered by the Supreme Court.

“The matter is fully settled, the PDP is now much stronger and will be more united and formidable going into the 2023 elections. The litigation, which centred on the legal affirmation of our authentic governorship candidate, had initially given fleeting but misplaced expectations to the fractured opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), but their hopes have been comprehensively and completely dashed with the decisive judgement of the Supreme Court, which has now settled the matter once and for all.

“The party further mooted that the massive judgement from the Supreme Court has not only settled all doubts and disquiet in our party, noting that our position has been strengthened as we will embrace campaigns with renewed energy and vigour, as we march towards victory in 2023.

“He urges unwavering party members to come together as one big united family, sheath their swords for the success of the party in the polls.

“As we celebrate this very important landmark judgement which is a major family victory in the life of our party, we hereby appeal strongly and sincerely to all our members, especially Olorogun Edevbie, to wholeheartedly embrace the Supreme Court’s decision, in our collective quest to build a most formidable campaign team that will not only decimate the opposition but also deliver resounding landslide victories in all our elections, especially the governorship poll.

Meanwhile, the incumbent Governor of the State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta congratulated Chief Sheriff Oborevwori on the Supreme Court victory that affirmed him as PDP Delta Governorship Candidate for the 2023 General Election.

“I have no enemy nor have the ability to hate anyone, we are one as a family and we return all the Glory to God,” Oborevwori said.

Responding to the judgment, Olorogun Edevbie said the “Supreme Court’s verdict today brings closure to the process of determining the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 Delta State Governorship election. It has undoubtedly been a long, drawn-out struggle in which several long-cherished relationships were strained.

“While the outcome was not what we desired or prayed for, as democrats, we accept it as final.  To all our party members and stakeholders, especially the youth and all the good people of Delta State in general who stood with us in our quest for the opportunity to deliver a modern State, I understand your disappointment.

“In the words of Senator Edward Kennedy, “the Dream lives on,” even as I say a huge THANK YOU from the depth of my heart.

Notwithstanding the outcome, we should all stand tall with our heads unbowed in the firm knowledge that we gave it our best. The court of posterity will undoubtedly judge us with favour.

At this stage, I congratulate the Delta State Gubernatorial flag bearer of PDP, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, and wish him well in the 2023 general elections.

“I would like to remind us all that the future of this State is far more important than anyone’s personal bias or interest, and I encourage us all to continue to strive for the good of every member of this commonwealth,” Edevbie said in a statement he personally signed.

Similarly, the Senior Political Adviser to the Governor of Delta State and vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon has described the Supreme Court as a process that has strengthened Nigeria’s democratic progression.

Expressing relief that the prolonged disagreement on the governorship flag bearer of the PDP has been laid to rest, he said the relief stems not from the outcome but the fact that, finally, the PDP in Delta State can now move on with the task of ensuring that the state remains under the umbrella of the party.
