Negotiations for a contract extension with Super Eagles Head Coach Eric Chelle have hit a snag, with the coach reportedly submitting a comprehensive 19-point list of demands to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

The demands, which have leaked to the press, have ignited a national debate over the cost of managing the national team and the expectations of foreign coaches.

Sources close to the NFF confirmed the list, which includes requests ranging from logistical support to significant financial compensation.

At the heart of the demands is a proposed monthly salary of $130,000 – a figure that covers Chelle and his entire technical staff, including a Personal Assistant.

Beyond the substantial salary, Chelle’s conditions outline a lifestyle befitting a high-profile figure. He requests a private SUV with a chauffeur and security detail, a fully furnished house in a secure location with 24-hour electricity, and a dedicated office equipped with a projector for match analysis.

The list also details extensive travel provisions, including business class flights for himself and his wife, and economy class tickets for his two children. He also requests GPS provision and comprehensive equipment supply tailored to his needs.

However, Chelle’s demands aren’t solely focused on personal comfort. He also outlines a clear vision for the future of Nigerian football, requesting control over international friendly match selection based on opponents, the implementation of youth development programs, and the freedom to scout both international and domestic players. He specifically requests provisions for regular travel to monitor Nigerian players abroad and attend local league matches to identify potential national team prospects across all age groups.

Crucially, Chelle insists on complete autonomy in team selection and player call-ups, and demands formal contracts for his support staff.

He also stipulates timely salary payments (on or before the 30th of each month) and inclusion of his PA in the bonus and allowance structure. Finally, he proposes monthly meetings with all national team coaches to foster collaboration.

The NFF has yet to officially respond to the demands, but sources suggest they are considered “ambitious” and are currently under review.

“We are evaluating the coach’s proposal,” an NFF official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters. “We appreciate his vision for the team, but we also have to be realistic about budgetary constraints and ensure value for money.”

The leaked demands have sparked a heated debate amongst Nigerian football fans. While some argue that investing in a top coach is essential for national team success, others criticize the perceived extravagance of the requests, particularly given the economic realities of the country.

The outcome of these negotiations will be crucial for the future of the Super Eagles, and will likely set a precedent for future coaching appointments in Nigeria.
