Gomez Laments Costly Errors as Liverpool Slip to Fifth After Villa Defeat

Joe Gomez has described Liverpool’s 4-2 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa as “frustrating and disappointing”, admitting the Reds “cost ourselves a big opportunity” in the race for Champions League qualification.

Liverpool trailed at half-time following Morgan Rogers’ strike, but Virgil van Dijk headed them level early in the second half. However, Villa regained control through Ollie Watkins (twice) and John McGinn, rendering Van Dijk’s second headed goal deep into stoppage time a mere consolation.

The result leaves Arne Slot’s side in fifth place in the table, still without guaranteed Champions League football heading into the final-day clash against Brentford at Anfield.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the match, Gomez reflected on a night of avoidable errors.

“It sums up our year, with it being in our hands and errors that are avoidable at pivotal points in the game where we could have got momentum,” the defender said.

“At the end of the day, it’s still in our hands. The goal remains the same. We’ve just got to do the job next week now.”

Gomez also pointed to lapses in concentration, particularly from set-pieces, as the source of frustration.

“It felt that way, it felt we had control. It’s just frustrating because it’s lapses in concentration. Something that’s highlighted, we know: they’re great at set-pieces.

“They’ve got a reputation for doing routines and doing things outside the box, and we knew that. We had to be focused.

“It’s fine margins in the Premier League and that adds to it. It is what it is now, we can’t sit here and feel sorry for ourselves, we just have to do the job.”

With a long week before the season finale, Gomez stressed the need for unity and a positive response.

“It’s a long week. Obviously we’ve got a lot of injuries but we’ve got to band together. We know we have to give the supporters something to support in how we play and how we approach the game. Hopefully we end the season on a positive note – that’s the goal.”
