Bishop Oscar Okwudili Ossai has emerged victorious in the hotly contested primary election of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to become the party’s candidate for the Enugu North Senatorial District in the forthcoming 10th Senate.

The election was held to fill the vacancy left by the late Senator Okey Ezea, who passed away late last year.

The Bishop, a well-known religious and community leader, announced his win on his Facebook page, describing the contest as intense but ultimately successful.

“Today, I won the hotly contested primary election as the candidate of NDC to represent Enugu North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate, to replace the late Senator Okey Ezea who passed on to glory late last year,” he wrote.

The primary election, which took place in the Nsukka Senatorial Zone, drew a large turnout of party delegates and supporters.

According to Bishop Ossai, the event was well attended and conducted peacefully, reflecting the political importance of the seat and the enthusiasm of local party members.

Political analysts note that the Enugu North Senatorial District has traditionally been a battleground, and the NDC’s choice of a prominent religious figure may signal a shift in electoral strategy.

Bishop Ossai, who is expected to face candidates from other parties in the general election, has promised to prioritise constituency development, youth empowerment, and good governance if elected.

The late Senator Okey Ezea, whom Bishop Ossai seeks to succeed, was a respected lawmaker whose passing created a significant political vacuum.

The by-election is expected to draw considerable national attention as parties finalise their candidates.
