Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, has spoken candidly about the Super Eagles’ recent disappointments, including a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Udinese shot-stopper, who was absent from the AFCON squad, expressed his frustration while watching from home.

“I was watching from home as a supporter, like all the other 200–300 million Nigerians,” Okoye told SportyTV. “We deserved to win the Cup, but next year is already the next opportunity for us, and we will do everything to bring it home again.”

The pain of the AFCON semi-final penalty shootout loss to hosts Morocco was compounded by the shock of missing out on World Cup qualification. Okoye admitted the team is still grappling with the reasons behind their struggles.

“National team football is a different kind of football, and the answer might be in the World Cup,” he said. “I don’t really know, because we have the quality, we have great players, top-level players, top characters in the team. Hopefully, we get it done next time.”

Despite the setbacks, the 24-year-old remains optimistic about the future. He has been recalled to the Super Eagles squad for upcoming international friendlies against Iran and Jordan in Antalya, marking a potential turning point for the team.

Okoye, born to a German mother and Nigerian father, reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to representing Nigeria. “I grew up in Germany, but my father was very, very present in my life… So, I keep a lot of Nigerian inside of me, and I’m very proud of it,” he stated.

He emphasised that choosing to play for Nigeria was a clear decision, despite having experience with German youth teams. “I always knew I wanted to play for Nigeria, and back then I didn’t have another option.”
