Is It Time To Reorder ESG? Expert Calls For Governance To Take Lead In Sustainability Efforts
A bold challenge to the widely accepted ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) framework is gaining traction, spearheaded by Dr. Orlando O. Odejide, who advocates for a fundamental shift: prioritising Governance above all else.
Dr. Odejide proposes a new framework, GES, arguing that robust governance is the bedrock upon which the long-term success and accountability of environmental and social initiatives are built.
This shift in perspective was presented during the recent ESG IWA 48 Training, a preliminary event leading up to the African Sustainability Perspectives (ASP) Summit 2025.
Dr. Odejide’s argument centres on the belief that strong governance structures are essential to prevent environmental initiatives from becoming mere “short-term fixes” and to ensure the effectiveness and longevity of social programs.
“Without a solid foundation of good governance, environmental and social efforts risk becoming fragmented, ineffective, and ultimately unsustainable,” Dr. Odejide stated.
“Prioritising Governance ensures accountability, transparency, and strategic alignment, allowing environmental and social initiatives to truly flourish.”
The implications of adopting a GES framework are far-reaching, impacting organisations, policymakers, and businesses seeking to integrate sustainability into their core operations.
It calls for a re-evaluation of existing sustainability strategies, compelling stakeholders to consider whether their governance structures are adequately equipped to support their environmental and social goals.
The ASP Summit 2025, scheduled for October 30, 2025, promises to be a pivotal event for exploring this paradigm shift.
Under the theme “Driving Sustainable Impact through SDG and ESG Alignment in Africa,” the summit will bring together leaders, innovators, and policymakers to:
Rethink frameworks and assumptions surrounding sustainability practices.
Exchange innovative solutions for addressing complex environmental and social challenges.
Spotlight bold ideas, such as Dr. Odejide’s GES paradigm, that challenge the status quo.
The summit aims to foster a crucial dialogue on how Africa can forge a more sustainable future, and Dr. Odejide’s call for a governance-first approach is expected to be a central topic of discussion.
As the sustainability landscape continues to evolve, the need for critical evaluation and innovation is paramount.
Dr. Odejide’s proposition of prioritising governance is sparking a vital conversation. Will you join the debate and contribute to shaping the future of sustainability?
The African Sustainability Perspectives (ASP) Summit 2025 will take place on October 30, 2025.
