Yenagoa Gears Up for Fifth Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship
Nigeria’s top Scrabble players are set to converge in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, this weekend for the highly anticipated fifth edition of the Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship.
Scheduled for August 2nd and 3rd at the Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Government House, the tournament is expected to attract over 200 participants, solidifying its position as the premier event on the Nigerian Scrabble Federation (NSF) calendar.
Organised by the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association (BYSA), the championship has become a staple for the nation’s best Scrabble talent since its inception in 2021.
According to BYSA Chairman, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, the local organizing committee is fully prepared to welcome the top scrabblers from across the country.
“Every year since 2021, the Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship has grown bigger and better,” Alabrah stated.
“This year, we are particularly excited to host even more participants and offer significantly increased prize money.”
This year’s edition boasts a total prize pool exceeding N10 million, with the Masters category winner taking home a coveted star prize of one million naira.
Exciting cash prizes will also be awarded to winners in the Intermediate, Veterans, Opens, and Students categories, as well as the best female players.
The Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship has consistently attracted the best players on the Nigerian and African Scrabble circuit, including world and African champions.
The tournament promises to be a thrilling showcase of skill, strategy, and wordplay, as competitors battle it out for the top spots and prestigious titles.
