Rotary Mourns Buhari’s Death as District Governor Says Nigeria Has Lost A Partner.
Dame (Dr) Princess Joy Okoro, District Governor of Rotary International District 9127, has stated that the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday has deprived Nigeria of a partner in the fight against polio and his family of a caring father.
Dr. Max Amuchie, District Media Relations Chair, issued a statement on Sunday night expressing condolences to the deceased President’s wife, Hajia Aisha Buhar, the Buhari family, and the people of Katsina State on the loss of a dear father and illustrious son.
“On behalf of Rotary International District 9127, I extend my condolences to former First Lady Hajia Aisha Buhari, the Buhari family, and the people of Katsina State.”As Rotarians, we recall that on August 25, 2020, during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, Nigeria was officially declared free of wild poliovirus, a significant milestone in the global effort to eradicate polio.
“The African Regional Certification Commission for Polio Eradication (ARCC) completed rigorous documentation and verification processes before declaring Nigeria free of wild poliovirus in 2020.” “This made Nigeria the last country in Africa to achieve this status,” Dame Joy Okoro stated.
The District Governor recalled that on 7 September 2021 President Buhari played host to Mr Shekhar Mehta, then Rotary International President, during which he thanked Rotary for interventions in Nigeria’s health sector particularly committing $268m in the fight against polio.
In addition, she said the deceased former President always sought Rotary’s partnership in his administration’s vaccination drive.
The District Governor prayed God to grant the departed former President eternal rest.
