Rivers Govt Awaits Supreme Court Judgment Details, Calls For Calm

The Rivers State government has urged for calm following a Supreme Court judgment impacting state funds and local government administration.

While acknowledging media reports surrounding the ruling, Commissioner for Information & Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, stated that the government is currently awaiting a full briefing from its legal team on the specifics of the judgment.

“At this time, we are awaiting a detailed briefing on the implications of the judgment,” Commissioner Johnson said in a press release.

“We will carefully evaluate the situation and determine the next steps to take in the best interest of Rivers State and its people.”

The commissioner emphasised the need for citizens to remain calm and law-abiding, continuing with their normal activities while the government seeks clarity.

A key point of clarification offered by the government concerns the status of 27 lawmakers who had defected.

Johnson stated that the Supreme Court did not address the issue of their defection, as this matter is currently pending before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

Therefore, according to the government’s interpretation, Amaewhule and the 26 other lawmakers remain in their positions until the Federal High Court rules on their defection.

The Rivers State government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the best interests of the state and its citizens.
