AfDB Donates $1 Million To Aid Flood Victims In Northeastern Nigeria
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has announced a US$1 million contribution from its Special Relief Fund to help flood-affected communities in northeastern Nigeria, particularly Borno State.
The devastating floods that struck in September 2024 exacerbated pre-existing issues of conflict, poverty, and food insecurity.
The funds, administered by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), will provide emergency food assistance to 120,000 women, men, and children. Each household will receive a 35 kilogrammes of staple food supplies.
WFP Country Director in Nigeria, David Stevenson, described the AfDB’s contribution as a “lifeline” for those facing rising food prices and economic uncertainty.
He emphasised the floods’ devastating impact on communities still recovering from years of conflict and displacement.
The September floods have significantly exacerbated an already dire situation. According to a November 2024 Cadre Harmonisé food security analysis, 33 million Nigerians will be food insecure by August 2025, spread across 26 states and the federal capital.
Abdul Kamara, Director General of the African Development Bank in Nigeria, expressed hope that the funding would alleviate the suffering of vulnerable populations.
He praised the Federal Government of Nigeria and the World Food Programme for their continued efforts to deliver aid in the face of difficult circumstances.
This contribution expands on the AfDB’s previous work in the region, which included restructuring the Programme for Integrated Agricultural Development,
Adaptation to Climate Change (PIDACC) and the Inclusive Basic Service Delivery and Livelihood Empowerment Programme to improve service delivery in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states.
The World Food Programme, in collaboration with the Nigerian government, currently provides food and nutritional assistance to 1 million people in Borno State on a monthly basis, as well as training and support for healthcare workers to combat malnutrition.
The African Development Bank (AfDB), Africa’s premier development finance institution, operates in 44 African countries, contributing to the economic and social development of its 54 regional member states.
This latest donation demonstrates its dedication to resolving humanitarian crises across the continent.
