Overhaul Transportation Scheme, NANS Tells South-East Governors
By Chuks Eke
The National Association of Nigerian Students, or NANS, has urged Southeast Governors to thoroughly review the NANS transport scheme across the region’s campuses.
Comrade Charles Ijeoma Obinna, Southeast Coordinator of NANS, ZONE F, made the plea on Wednesday in a press statement, noting that the review of the transport scheme would undoubtedly ease the movement of students from their various homes to their respective classrooms while also providing some measure of security for them.
According to Comrade Charles Ijeoma Obinna, “Soludo is a digital governor to have introduced a transport scheme. However, some exceptions should be made for students. We are pleading with Soludo and any other governor to take pity on us and review NANS’ transport scheme. We want the student fee subsidised, and we want a roundtable discussion to make these things possible for students.”
Also speaking, NANS National Director of Sports, Comrade Ernest Obinna Okafor, said there is a need to review the tax on students’ buses. Our drivers rely on us for certain types of protection because we require them to have a certain amount. We are urging the state government to renegotiate our bus drivers’ taxes because they place a significant burden on us. Again, the country’s economic situation is having a negative impact on students, and we ask Mr Governor to provide them with some relief.”
Marking his one-month anniversary in office, Comr Ijeomah urged the President, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Bola Tinubu, to address the deteriorating state of roads in the Southeast, which is posing a serious threat to road users, particularly students who have been victims of accidents and robberies.
Comr Umezuluorah Chukwuebuka, Vice President/Coordinator of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), has urged the Minister of Education to nominate federal polytechnic Oko as the best candidate for the rector position.
Umezuluorah insisted that the best candidate chosen by the School Council be supported for maximum service delivery. He also advised students to apply for federal student loans rather than dropping out of school due to financial constraints.
National Vice President of the National Association of Nigeria Colleges of Education Students (NANCES), Comrade Obi Christian Chukwunecherem, praised President Tinubu’s student loan initiative and urged students to participate in the loan scheme.
Meanwhile, the Southeast Cordinator, Comr Obinna Ijeomah, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his fatherly advice to Nigerian students and thanked him for approving the student loan to help combat the number of out-of-school students and those struggling to pay their fees, as well as the approval of CNG buses for NANS structures across the Federation.
“We also want to take this opportunity to thank President Tinubu for selecting our own Lady Bianca Ojukxu to serve as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.”
He praised the Anambra State Governor, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo, for providing free education in the state, as well as the newly appointed Minister of Education, Hon Tunji Alausa, and pledged to collaborate with him to improve student welfare.
We also appreciate the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Gov Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for providing an enabling environment for NANS during the convention that brought him and his excos in power, and the working Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti, for his giant strides in infrastructure, as well as the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, Uturu Okigwe, Prof Ndukwe Okeudo, Pro Chancellor Rt Hon Agwu. U. Agwu, and the Gov
He also praised the global National President of NANS, H.E. Lucy Omoneye, and the Senate President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, for their efforts to reposition NANS and improve the welfare of the ideal student union.
