Two Police Officers Feared Killed As Angry Youths Pull Down Wike Statue At Obio-Akpor Council Secretariat
Angry youths have demolished a statue of Chief Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, at the Obio-Akpor council secretariat, which was erected by George Ariolu, former Chairman of the LGA.
The youths demolished the statue in the early hours of Tuesday, as shown in a viral video on social media, saying in Ikwerre, “Wike is no longer reigning here, no more Wike, no more Wike.”
After removing the cement statue from its pedestal, the youths smashed it on the concrete floor while singing traditional songs and dancing to the music.
The festivities were cut short around 12 p.m., when police stormed the premises and barred the youths from entering the administrative and legislative buildings.
When the police arrived, they ordered the youths to leave the secretariat immediately, and when they lingered, battle-ready operatives deployed tear gas into the crowd and fired warning shots into the air, after stationing anti-riot trucks and vans at the entrance.
Following the commotion, some youths and traders at the nearby popular Rumuokoro market began fleeing for their lives, with some traders even abandoning their wares and fleeing altogether.
Our correspondent on the scene noticed a large number of police officers at the Obio-Akpor council secretariat, which had been cordoned off.
Meanwhile, two police officers are believed to have been killed during a clash between youths and police in Omuma Local Government Area.
The state police have yet to confirm the development because the details are sketchy.
