The National Mathematical Centre in Abuja provides the impetus and organisation for Nigeria’s participation in the Olympiad. According to the NMC, one of the National Mathematical Centres (NMC) Abuja’s mandates is to identify and train young talents in the mathematical sciences for them to compete internationally. Nigeria began participating in the International Mathematical Olympiad through the Centre in 2005, initially as an Observer Country and then as a Participant Country in 2006. Nigeria participates in six central international mathematical science Olympiads each year, which are coordinated by the Centre.
