Yobe Named Best State In Subnational Audit Efficacy Index.
Hon. Mai Mala Buni, Governor of Yobe, has promised that his administration will improve accountability and transparency in governance to ensure effective service delivery and value for money.
The governor made the promise on Saturday in response to Yobe State’s first-place finish in the 2023 subnational Audit Efficacy Index report on accountability and transparency in public finances.
He stated: “The state government, through the Fiscal Responsibility Board, implemented public finance reforms, which resulted in worthwhile investments, accountability, and transparency in government transactions.
“I am glad to say that our audit department and institutions like the Bureau for Public Procurement are independent and ensure transparency and accountability of government expenditure, which has placed the state above board.
The Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative (Plsi), an internationally recognised civil society organisation known for tracking public accountability and transparency in public fund expenditure, ranked Yobe and Ekiti states as the best overall among the 36 states in the country.
Plsi stated that the assessment process considered critical factors such as obtaining value for public funds, audit legal framework and operationalization, annual activity report, publication of annual audit report, and performance.
Other critical components of the assessment include citizen account reports, civil society and media participation reports, and the legislative committee’s monitoring and oversight functions on public accounts.
Yobe State was ranked first in the 2023 subnational Audit Efficacy Index Report, up from second in 2022.
