By Chuks Eke—
The Anambra State Police Command has reported the neutralisation of a 21-year-old suspected armed robber and notorious cultist, named Chukwuka Solomon, during a security operation in the state.
In a press statement released on Tuesday by the Command’s Spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, police operatives from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu carried out the operation in the early hours of Monday.
Ikenga noted that the suspect was neutralised in his hideout in the Amikwo community of Awka South LGA after attempting to escape during police search operations.
During the search, one pump-action gun, two locally made pistols, and some expended ammunition were recovered from the suspect.
The statement read: “The Anambra State Police operatives attached to the Special Anti-Cultism Squad Enugu-Ukwu recorded the death of one Chukwuka Solomon, male, aged 21 years, an alleged armed robber and notorious cultist.
“The suspect attempted to escape during police search operations in their den at Amikwo. During the search, one pump-action gun, two locally made pistols, and some expended ammunition were recovered.
“The operatives successfully repelled an ambush attack by other gang members during the search operations, evident from the blood traces at the scene, indicating that some armed hoodlums escaped with various degrees of gunshot injuries.
“The suspect was initially apprehended through the community’s efforts and handed over to the police team for further investigation on the report of his involvement in cult activities terrorising the community with firearms.
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being a member of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity, also known as ‘Baggars’, and admitted to possessing operational weapons belonging to the confraternity.
“He further disclosed that he works for a notorious individual popularly known as ‘Aza Man’, who is involved in criminal activities disturbing the peace of Awka and its surrounding areas.
“The operatives are currently pursuing leads provided by the suspect to apprehend the gang leader and other members.
“Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reiterated the Command’s commitment to combating cultism, armed robbery, and other violent crimes in the state.
“Further developments will be communicated in due course,” the statement concluded.
