Save Nigeria Group USA (SNG USA) has condemned the devastating terrorist attack that occurred over the weekend in Niger State, where at least 42 civilians were killed, and many others were abducted.

The group labelled the incident as a deliberate massacre targeting civilians and an alarming indication of the escalating violence against Christian communities in Nigeria.

On January 3, 2026, armed militants stormed the Kasuwan Daji Market in Demo village, Borgu LGA, launching the brutal attack from forest enclaves near Kainji National Park.

Eyewitness reports indicate that the death toll may reach as high as 60, with numerous women and children among those taken hostage.

Among the victims were children who had recently escaped a previous mass abduction from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papari.

Days before this attack, gunmen targeted the residence of a local parish priest, vandalising religious property and narrowly missing the priest himself.

In a further troubling development, similar assaults were reported in Adamawa State, where ISWAP militants attacked Christian villages, threatening residents with death unless they converted to Islam.

This comes amid a declaration by ISWAP that Christians across Nigeria are now considered legitimate targets.

SNG USA is demanding urgent action from the Nigerian government, calling for immediate security operations to dismantle the terrorists’ hideouts, accountability for failures in protecting vulnerable communities, and enhanced international cooperation with U.S. counterterrorism partners.

They assert that the current strategy of disarming civilians while militants remain heavily armed has resulted in catastrophic outcomes.

The group stresses the need for a substantial policy shift to allow community self-defence measures, emphasising that the right to life encompasses the right to self-defence, especially when the state fails to provide safety.

“As the violence continues to escalate, it’s clear that what is happening in Nigeria is not random banditry, but an ideologically driven campaign to obliterate Christian communities through force,” warned Stephen Osemwegie, President of the Save Nigeria Group USA.

The organisation reaffirms its commitment to shedding light on the ongoing atrocities and advocating for serious intervention until the violence ceases and communities can begin to heal.
