In a series of engagements aimed at fostering national unity and advancing healthcare, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, embarked on a journey through Nigeria that saw him meet with influential figures and support essential educational programs.

On his official X handle, Obi revealed that he travelled to Zaria to engage in discussions with Professor Ango Abdullahi, a distinguished academic and elder statesman.

Their conversation focused on the pressing issues facing Nigeria, underscoring the need for unity and collaborative efforts to reconstruct the nation.

“We spoke frankly about the challenges confronting our nation and the responsibility of leadership to rise above divisions,” Obi shared, emphasising the importance of working towards the collective good of all Nigerians.

While at the Zaria airport, Obi encountered a group of graduating pilots, whom he encouraged to remain dedicated to their training and careers.

“Nigeria needs your skills, integrity, and professionalism,” he told the enthusiastic graduates, highlighting the potential contributions of young talents to the nation’s future.

Following his visit to Zaria, Obi travelled to Niger State to meet with former Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida. During their meeting, Obi presented Babangida with an autographed copy of “Growing Apart,” a book that examines the divergent paths taken by Indonesia and Nigeria despite their similar beginnings.

This discussion further explored critical topics such as national unity, security, and the imperative of improving citizens’ lives.

“Meaningful progress requires honest dialogue and collective responsibility for the future of our dear country,” Obi reiterated after he met with Babangida.
Continuing his philanthropic efforts, Obi visited the College of Nursing Sciences at St. Charles Borromeo Hospital in Onitsha, where he made a significant donation of ₦15 million to bolster nursing education.

“Investing in education and healthcare remains central to sustainable national development,” he affirmed, urging staff and students to pursue their studies with diligence and a commitment to service.

During his visit, Obi recounted an incident from a recent flight where a medical emergency was adeptly managed by a trained health professional, highlighting the vital importance of well-prepared healthcare workers.

He drew a stark comparison between Indonesia’s health insurance coverage of over 95% and Nigeria’s estimated 5%, calling for urgent investments in the healthcare system at all levels.

Obi concluded his visit by appealing to fellow Nigerians to support healthcare and educational institutions as part of the broader effort to create a “New Nigeria.”

“A New Nigeria is possible,” he declared, instilling hope for a future marked by unity, progress, and enhanced public health.
