Kanu in court today

The terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was brought to a standstill on Friday at the Federal High Court in Abuja after Kanu claimed he was denied access to his crucial case file by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The development comes after Kanu recently dismissed his legal team, previously led by former Attorney-General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi (SAN), and opted to represent himself in the ongoing proceedings.

During the court session, prosecuting counsel Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) reminded the court that the day was scheduled for Kanu to open his defense.

However, Kanu, addressing the court, stated that individuals tasked with delivering his case file were prevented from accessing him by DSS officials.

“I cannot proceed with my defense without reviewing my case documents,” Kanu told the court, emphasising the need to adequately prepare his case.

He requested a brief adjournment until Friday, October 27, to allow him the necessary time to access his materials and properly formulate his defense.

Kanu further informed the court of his intention to call witnesses from the United Kingdom, the United States, Kenya, and Ethiopia. He pleaded for permission to receive visitors over the weekend to facilitate crucial consultations and preparations for his defense.

The prosecution raised no objections to Kanu’s request. Justice Omotosho subsequently directed the DSS to permit Kanu to receive visitors on Saturday and Sunday, enabling him to consult with potential witnesses and review his case file.

Following the pleas and directions, the court adjourned the case to October 27. Justice Omotosho stressed that the six days allocated for Kanu’s defense would be strictly adhered to and no extensions would be granted.
