Igbo Community In FCT Intensifies Call For Seaport In South East
The Igbo Community Association (ICA) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is urging the current administration to prioritise investment in seaports, particularly those in the South East geopolitical region and existing facilities in the Niger Delta.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja today, the ICA emphasised the importance of such investments in revitalising the Nigerian economy and unlocking significant growth opportunities across the country.
“We are at a critical point in our country’s economic development,” said Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, President General of the Igbo Community Association FCT.
“For far too long, the South East region has been denied the economic benefits that easily accessible seaports bring. Investing in these critical infrastructures is about more than just regional development; it is about unlocking the nation’s untapped potential.”
The ICA argued that the lack of functional seaports in the South East has resulted in an over-reliance on Lagos ports, causing congestion, increased transportation costs, and significant delays in goods import and export.
They argue that this situation stifles economic activity in the Southeast and has a negative impact on businesses across the country.
“The economic benefits of having functional seaports in the South East are enormous,” Engr. Ellis-Ezenekwe stated.
“It will stimulate industrial growth, create job opportunities, relieve pressure on existing port infrastructure, and, ultimately, improve Nigeria’s overall economic competitiveness.”
The call for investment extends beyond the Southeast. The ICA also urges the government to upgrade and modernise existing seaports in the Niger Delta area.
They emphasise the ports’ strategic importance to the oil and gas industry, as well as their potential for diversification into other sectors.
“The Niger Delta region has significant maritime assets,” Engr. Ellis-Ezenekwe stated. “Upgrading these existing facilities will not only improve the efficiency of the oil and gas sector, but will also create new opportunities for trade, tourism, and other maritime-related industries.”
The ICA is not alone in making this call. Several business leaders, economists, and community stakeholders have expressed similar views, emphasising the long-term economic benefits of seaport development in these areas.
Recognising the value of a unified voice, the Igbo Community Association invites other communities and organisations to join their clarion call.
They believe that a concerted effort is required to convince the government to prioritise this critical infrastructure investment.
“We are calling on all well-meaning Nigerians – from the South East, the Niger Delta, and across the country – to join us in this advocacy,” Engr. Ellis-Ezenekwe stated.
“This is not just an Igbo issue; it is a national one. Nigeria will benefit greatly from a more diverse and efficient port system.”
The association intends to pursue additional advocacy efforts, such as meetings with government officials, presentations at economic forums, and public awareness campaigns.
They remain hopeful that the current administration will recognise the significant economic potential of seaport investment and take decisive action to address this pressing need.
“We are confident that the government will listen to the people’s voices and prioritise the development of seaports in the South East and Niger Delta,” Engr. Ellis-Ezenekwe said.
“This investment is not just about infrastructure; it is about making Nigeria stronger, more prosperous, and more equitable for everyone.
