New Rivers CP Vows To Eradicate Corruption, Protect Human Rights
The newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has pledged a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and human rights abuses within the state police command.
In his maiden press briefing on Friday at the Command Headquarters in Port Harcourt, CP Adepoju outlined a comprehensive strategy focused on improving the safety, security, and overall well-being of Rivers State residents.
CP Adepoju emphasised his commitment to professional policing, urging officers to remain apolitical and prioritise the safety of lives and property. He highlighted several key areas of focus, including:
Combating Crime: The CP intends to leverage intelligence-led policing, community partnerships, and inter-agency collaboration to proactively prevent and respond to crime, specifically targeting youth restiveness, cultism, oil theft, and environmental crimes.
He stressed the importance of enhanced response times and increased police visibility, particularly in metropolitan areas.
Addressing Corruption: CP Adepoju vowed to eliminate all forms of corruption within the command, promising swift and decisive action against any officer found guilty of misconduct. He stated his intention to enforce discipline and maintain transparency in all police operations.
Protecting Human Rights: The CP assured residents that police officers will be held accountable for any human rights violations. He urged citizens to report such incidents promptly to the police for immediate investigation and appropriate action.
He also stressed a commitment to more professional and courteous interactions between officers and the public.
Community Engagement: CP Adepoju stressed the importance of collaboration with stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community leaders, and the media.
He called for actionable information from the public to facilitate effective policing.
Specific initiatives outlined included addressing land-grabbing issues in collaboration with the police legal team, enforcing vehicle regulations (particularly concerning tinted glasses) with a human face, and improving response times to distress calls.
CP Adepoju concluded by assuring Rivers State residents that his administration is committed to ensuring their safety and security, stating, “I will ensure Rivers people sleep with their two eyes closed.”
His comprehensive approach signals a renewed commitment to transparent, accountable, and citizen-focused policing in Rivers State.
