Jonathan welcomes Obi to the event

Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and presidential hopeful for the African Democratic Congress, has used the launch of a new report by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation to deliver a stark assessment of Nigeria’s current trajectory.

Mr. Obi detailed his attendance at the event on his Facebook page, describing the Foundation’s landmark report – titled “Strengthening the Nexus Between Democracy and Economic Growth in Nigeria” – as a crucial reiteration of uncomfortable truths.

He stated the report, and subsequent panel discussions, highlighted a clear failure in key areas of national development, specifically citing healthcare, education, and poverty reduction.

“Over the past decade, our democratic progress has weakened while the economic well-being of our people has continued to decline,” Obi wrote.

The event appeared to coalesce around the need for fundamental reform of Nigeria’s leadership selection process.

Obi emphasised a consensus view that future leaders must be chosen based on “competence, capacity, compassion, character, and a commitment to serving the well-being of the people.”

He further stressed the importance of robust, independent, and accountable institutions as vital to a thriving democracy.

“We must rebuild trust in our institutions, restore discipline in Leadership, and ensure that governance translates into measurable improvements in the lives of Nigerians,” Obi concluded, ending his post with his campaign slogan: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
