Nigeria Calls For Dialogue With Niger Amidst Accusations Of Terrorism Involvement
Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to peaceful relations with Niger and invited the country’s military junta to open dialogue, following accusations from the Nigerien government that Nigeria was complicit in a recent terrorist attack.
In a statement released Tuesday, Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar addressed concerns raised by the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) leader, General Abdourahman Tchiani, who accused Nigeria of involvement in an attack by the Lakurawa group. Minister Tuggar firmly rejected these allegations.
“The Federal Republic of Nigeria reaffirms its unwavering commitment to peace, stability, and regional harmony in West Africa,” the statement read.
It emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to dialogue as the cornerstone of resolving disputes, stating that any actions undermining Niger’s sovereignty and security are contrary to Nigeria’s policy.
The statement highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Niger, emphasising their economic interdependence.
Minister Tuggar stated that unfounded allegations create unnecessary tensions that threaten the collective progress of the region.
Nigeria explicitly reaffirmed its respect for Niger’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, aligning its position with ECOWAS principles.
The statement extended a formal invitation to the Nigerien leadership for open discussions to address mutual concerns and explore confidence-building measures, including collaborative support to alleviate the humanitarian impact on border communities.
“We call upon regional and international partners to support efforts aimed at fostering reconciliation and stability, rather than deepening divisions,” the statement urged.
Minister Tuggar concluded by reiterating Nigeria’s commitment to diplomacy, mutual respect, and the pursuit of peace, expressing confidence that constructive engagement will lead to a more prosperous and stable future for both nations.
The invitation for dialogue marks a significant step in attempting to de-escalate tensions between the two neighbouring countries.
