The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has once again issued a warning about the steady rise in water levels in the Niger and Benue rivers, claiming that it has reached a peak.

On Friday, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, Director General of NIHSA, stated that the water levels in both rivers have reached the “red mark.”

Mohammed advised citizens living along river banks to relocate to safer areas to protect their lives and property.

He emphasised the importance of Nigerians paying attention to the agency’s warning, adding that they should take action by clearing their drainage systems and gutters and making room for water runoff.

He also stated that the persistent rain across the country has caused devastating flash floods.

The Director General of NIHSA reiterated the agency’s mandate to manage and develop the nation’s water resources. NIHSA will monitor water levels of major rivers and tributaries daily, issue flood warnings and alerts, and provide flood predictions.

“NIHSA is proactive in collaborating with emergency response agencies and the media.

“It is an effort to help save Nigerians’ lives and property to reduce flood damage, improve food security, and promote national flood resilience, thereby fostering sustainable water resource management,” he said.
