Nigerian Government Set to Improve Health Research Funding, Review Ecosystem

The federal government intends to increase health research funding as part of its overall goal of reforming and improving Nigeria’s healthcare system. This comes as the  Ministry of Health hosts a one-day National Strategic Meeting on Health Research Development and Innovation in Abuja on Wednesday.

Dr Lolade Dosunmu Adeyemi, Special Assistant on Research and Innovation to the Honourable Minister of State for Health, made this statement available on Tuesday. The meeting, organised by the ministry’s Department of Health Planning, Research, and Statistics, has the theme “Health Research in Nigeria: Time to Change the Narrative.”

Following the Honourable Minister of Health and Social Welfare’s recent inauguration of the National Health Research Committee (NHRC) and National Health Research Ethics Committee (NHREC), the meeting will deliberate on issues of critical importance to health system research in Nigeria, including a review of res unlocking ecosystem to unlock the healthcare value chain through cutting-edge innovative research and capacity strengthening for tee.

According to the statement, the one-day meeting will also discuss resource mobilisation initiatives and collaborate with the legislative branch of government to increase funding for health research in Nigeria.

The meeting will also be attended by research leaders and key stakeholders such as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, the Chairman of the House Committee on Health, the EU Ambassador, representatives of WHO and NAFDAC, and other dignitaries.

Professor Folashade Ogunsola, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, will give a keynote presentation, followed by technical presentations and panel discussions. A communique will be issued following the conclusion of the meeting.
