Peter Obi Mourns Deaths Of Wigwe, His wife, Son, And Ogunbanjo
Mr. Peter Obi, Nigeria’s most prominent politician and philanthropist, has expressed his deep sadness over the death of Access Bank Holding Company’s CEO, Herbert Wigwe.
Wigwe, along with his Anambra S tate born wife and their son, perished in the air crash on Saturday in California, USA.
Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, expressed his sadness over the news in a series of tweets early Sunday morning, citing Wigwe as a long-time ally.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of my dear friend, Mr Herbert Wigwe, CEO of Access Holdings, and his wife and son, as well as another close friend, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, former group chairman of NGX Group.”
In a tweet on his X handle, he wrote:
“This loss has a profound impact across the country. Herbert and I first met when he was on the verge of starting his marriage. I vividly recall helping him prepare for his traditional wedding and attending the ceremony with his wife, Chizoba, from Achina, Anambra State. Since then, I have kept in touch with his projects in my own small way. Herbert, a determined and forward-thinking individual, led Access Bank to new heights after his brother, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede.
His notable contributions went beyond the professional realm, with commendable philanthropic efforts in health and education, exemplified by the establishment of Wigwe University, which demonstrated his deep commitment to education as a driver of development.
The passing of such a remarkable person serves as a reminder of the fleeting nature of life, encouraging us to live with a purpose that benefits humanity. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Herbert, his beloved wife, his son, and everyone else who died in the tragic plane crash. May God grant them eternal rest and strength to Herbert’s family, Access Holdings, and all of us who are grieving this irreplaceable loss.”
The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election prayed to God for the deceased family members’ peaceful repose.
